In November 2024, we planted a Miyawaki pocket forest using Japanese forestry techniques with the help of SUGi. It's much denser than our existing woodland - 1,500 trees in 500 square metres, compared to our usual spacing.
What We Did
We planted 1,500 trees, 22 native species, 30x denser than normal planting
This creates layered habitat from ground cover to canopy. Our existing open woodland is good for some wildlife; this dense area suits others.
This contributed to increasing habitat types across our 12 acres instead of just one.
What's Next
The forest needs regular care as it establishes. Check upcoming events if you want to help.
Location: Next to the mound
Thanks to Adrian and Forest Maker James Godfrey-Faussett from the SUGi team for the expertise.
